Uterine cancer

Uterine Cancer

Uterine cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, begins in the lining of the uterus (endometrium). It is the most common type of cancer affecting the female reproductive organs. Understanding its types, symptoms, and treatment options is crucial for early detection and effective management.

Types of Uterine Cancer

There are different types of uterine cancer, but the most common is endometrial cancer, which originates in the lining of the uterus. Less common types include uterine sarcoma, which develops in the muscles or other tissues of the uterus.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of uterine cancer is not fully understood, but several factors may increase the risk:

  • Hormonal Factors: Estrogen imbalance, such as having high levels of estrogen without enough progesterone, can increase the risk.
  • Age: Uterine cancer is more common in postmenopausal women, though it can occur at any age.
  • Obesity: Excess body fat can lead to increased estrogen levels, which may increase the risk.
  • Diabetes: Women with diabetes may have an increased risk of uterine cancer.
  • Family History: Having close relatives with uterine or other cancers may increase the risk.

Symptoms

Early-stage uterine cancer may not cause symptoms, but as the cancer progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding: Postmenopausal bleeding or bleeding between periods.
  • Pelvic Pain or Pressure: Pain in the pelvic area or feeling of pressure in the lower abdomen.
  • Painful Urination: Discomfort or pain during urination.
